Retirement Readiness

Know you'll have enough to retire comfortably

You’ve spent decades building your career and accumulating wealth, but as retirement approaches, the questions keep you up at night:

  • Do I have enough saved to maintain my lifestyle?
  • When can I actually afford to retire?
  • How do I make my money last 20-30 years without a paycheck

The shift from accumulating wealth to living off it feels overwhelming. You’ve been successful at building your career, but retirement planning feels like uncharted territory.

At Align, we help you:

Whether you’re 5 years out or ready to retire next year, we’ll help you transition with clarity and peace of mind.

Income Replacement Strategy

Turn decades of saving into a reliable retirement income

You’ve been a diligent saver, but now you face a completely different challenge: How do you replace your paycheck with your portfolio?
The questions feel endless:

  • Should I take Social Security now or wait?
  • How much can I safely withdraw each year?
  • What if the market crashes right after I retire?
  • Should I take my pension as a lump sum or as monthly income?

We wrote through two of those in detail: pension lump sum or annuity and financial planning for women, our guide to what the plan should include at this stage.

How do I handle healthcare costs without employer insurance?
You didn’t spend your career worrying about sequence of returns risk or Medicare supplement plans. But now these decisions feel critical to your financial security. As a fiduciary advisor, we specialize in helping successful women navigate this transition. We’ll create a comprehensive income replacement strategy that accounts for all your revenue sources and helps you sleep well at night.

Let’s build a retirement plan you can trust.

If you're a decision-making woman with

A fit for Align

A fit for Align usually looks like this: a retirement with real moving parts (multiple accounts, equity compensation, pension or Social Security timing decisions) and a desire for a financial partner rather than a one-time answer.

A desire for a financial partner

You appreciate expert guidance and a true partner in planning and decision-making.

A commitment to feeling good

You not only want to reach your financial goals, you also want to feel good about your financial future along the way.

...then we should talk.

A Guide Who Understands Your Retirement Concerns

I’ve worked with many successful women who excel at building wealth during their careers but feel anxious about the transition to retirement.

They ask the same big question you have: when can I afford to stop working?

These aren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet. They’re about your freedom, security, and peace of mind for the next 20-30 years of your life.

I started Align to be the advisor I wish more women had access to during this critical transition:

Someone who doesn’t just run retirement calculators, but who understands the emotional complexity of leaving your career, the importance of maintaining your independence, and the peace of mind that comes with a well-thought-out plan.

You deserve a partner who sees retirement not as an ending, but as the next exciting chapter of your life.

Which fee-only advisors specialize in women’s retirement?

A fee-only advisor who specializes in women’s retirement is paid only by her clients, holds the CFP® designation, and spends most of her week on the decisions that cluster in the ten years before retirement: Social Security timing, pension elections, Roth conversions, Medicare and IRMAA, and the tax on a large pre-tax 401(k). Align Financial Solutions is one of them. We are independent, fee-only advisors in Hoboken, New Jersey. We receive no commissions, we do not sell products, and we are a fiduciary 100% of the time. Most of the women we work with are between 50 and 65, hold their savings across several accounts, and make the financial decisions in their household.

To check any advisor on this question, ask three things: how she is paid (the answer should be “only by clients,” confirmed in Form ADV Part 2A), what share of her clients are within ten years of retirement, and whether tax planning is inside the fee or billed separately. Two places to start reading: the 2026 retirement planning guide for women over 50 and, if you are leaving an executive role, retirement strategies for female executives.

Retirement Planning for Women: Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single best age, but a few dates are fixed by law and should anchor the decision: penalty-free retirement account withdrawals at 59½, Medicare at 65, full Social Security retirement age at 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later, and required minimum distributions at 73 or 75 depending on birth year. The right retirement date is the one your income plan can carry across those milestones, including the years before Medicare when you buy your own health coverage.

Three things change the math. Women live longer on average, so the same savings must last more years. In a marriage, the survivor keeps only the larger Social Security check and usually files taxes as a single person, which raises the tax bill on the same income. And if you are single, there is no second income, no second check, and no one to split a care decision with, so the plan has to carry itself. Retirement planning for women prices all three in rather than running a generic projection. Our complete guide walks through each one.

The number depends on what you spend, what Social Security and any pension will cover, and how your savings are taxed when you draw on them. Two women with the same total can have very different outcomes if one holds everything pre-tax and the other can draw from taxable, Roth, and pre-tax accounts. We build the number from your spending, not a rule of thumb, and stress-test it against a long life. See the math on retiring with $2 million.

For a single woman, waiting until 70 usually pays because the larger check is insurance against a long life. For a married couple, the higher earner’s check is the one that should wait, since it becomes the survivor’s income. Health, the cost of bridging the gap years from savings, and widow’s benefit options can change the answer, so we model the claiming date alongside taxes and Roth conversions rather than on its own. Which spouse should delay explains the survivor rule.

Align is fee-only, so you pay us directly and no one else pays us. Wealth management, which includes your retirement income plan and investment management, is billed as a percentage of the assets we manage or advise on. A planning-only engagement is a fixed fee set by the complexity of your situation. We walk through exactly how we are paid on the first call, and there are no commissions anywhere in the relationship.

We are based in Hoboken, New Jersey, and registered as an investment adviser in New Jersey. Most of our work happens virtually. If you live outside New Jersey, ask on the call and we will tell you plainly whether we are able to work together.
